Dundee: in the heart of the wine country of Oregon

ABOUT DUNDEE

LOCATION

Dundee is located in Yamhill County in northwest Oregon. It covers a total of 1.4 square miles, and sits at an elevation of 190 feet. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver, Oregon-Washington metro area. It can be accessed from Highway 99W, itself accessible from I-5. The nearest city is the city of Newberg, only 3.6 miles away. Other nearby cities include Dayton, Lafayette, Carlton, and Sherwood. Hillsboro is 17.7 miles away, and Portland is just over 30 miles from Dundee. For air transportation, the nearest airport is the McMinnville Municipal Airport, about 11 miles away. The McNary Field is 26 miles away in Salem. For international travel, the Portland International Airport is located 37 miles from Dundee. For transportation across the Willamette River into Marion County, take the Wheatland Ferry, located south of Dayton (a total driving distance of 14 miles from Dundee). It costs only $1.35 per car.

HISTORY/POPULATION

Dundee was incorporated in 1895. It was settled by a group of pioneer families, and named after the childhood home of one of the settlers, a Mr. William Reid, who hailed from Dundee Scotland. The current population stands at 2,598. Good weather and fertile soil make Dundee a perfect place for crop cultivation, and in fact, the town is rife with vineyards, plum trees, filberts, and English walnuts, which make up the major crops. It is also worth noting the extremely low crime rate in Dundee. There were no violent crimes, as reflected in the latest statistics from 2001, not even so much as an auto theft. Three burglaries and four counts of larceny were all there was to keep the local police busy in this peaceful small town.

ABOUT EDUCATION

Dundee Elementary School is part of the Newberg School District and offers kindergarten through 5th grade. There are 22.4 students per teacher and a total enrollment of 403 students. 3.6 miles away in Newberg can be found another four elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school. Newberg also has three private schools with classes from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Newberg library is available to residents of Dundee, and has an impressive collection of over 58,000 books as well as audio and video materials and periodicals. For higher education, the George Fox University in McMinnville is the closest location. George Fox offers degrees in over 30 majors, 14 master's degree programs, as well as doctoral degrees. It has also been hailed as a "Best Value" college by U.S. News and World Report. A little further away in Portland can be found Portland State University (about 26 miles away) and Portland Community College (about 49 miles). Both of these colleges have over 12,000 full-time students and offer a wide variety of courses.

ABOUT HEALTHCARE

The Providence Newberg Hospital is your closest alternative. Located on Villa Road in Newberg (3.6 miles from Dundee), Providence is a not-for-profit hospital that has been in existence for over 40 years and offers everything from nutritional counseling to cardiology to surgery. Providence proclaims it to be a Christian-oriented hospital, carrying the message of love and understanding into its business, and has also received honors as one of the best companies to work for in Oregon. Other major hospitals in the area include Oregon State Hospital (about 25 miles away in Salem) and S.W. Washington Medical Center (about 50 miles away in Vancouver, Washington).

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS

One of Dundee's special events is the Dundee Decades, a celebration that occurs on various Friday evenings during the summer and includes music and dancing featuring different historical eras. Dundee also has a number of fine restaurants for evenings out. Known for its vineyards, Dundee is home to a number of wineries and many people enjoy the wine tasting and guided tours they offer. Local wineries include Argyle, Cameron, Duck Pond Cellars, and Torii Mor Winery, among others.

For the golf enthusiast, Riverwood Golf Course offers 9 holes with a par of 35. Riverwood was built in 1932 and is the oldest golf course operating in Yamhill County today.

Dundee is also surrounded by natural beauty, and Bald Peak State Park is nearby for your enjoyment. Bald Peak State Park can be found along the scenic drive through the Chehalem hills toward Hillsboro. It features stunning views of the Willamette Valley, as well as views of five snowcapped Cascade peaks (when the cloud cover allows), including Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Ranier, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, and Mt. Jefferson. You can walk through the forest or have a picnic in the grass. There is no fee to use this park, but be sure to bring your own drinking water, as water is not available in the park.

Real Estate Tips
Cosmetic Improvements >Lighting Up the Sale

Lighting is an important factor to take into account when you are selling your home. Natural and artificial lighting can create a mood that buyers notice when they walk into your home, so don't overlook this significant factor which can favorably influence a potential buyer.

Before your house is shown, walk through each room with an eye to creating a pleasant ambiance through lighting. Accentuate the natural light by keeping curtains open and windows sparkling clean. Arrange your furniture to take advantage of the best view. You may want to install indirect lighting to highlight a vaulted ceiling or to draw attention to indoor plants. Dimmer switches can create simple and inexpensive lighting appeal. Place a lamp and table arrangement in a dark alcove or corner to brighten up the area.
