ABOUT SHERWOOD

LOCATION

Sherwood is located in southwest Portland in Washington County. Highway 99W offers freeway access to Sherwood. (The I-5 connects to the 99 near Tigard, as does the 217.) Sherwood is less than 20 miles from Portland, and for those needing to commute, the drive should take you about half an hour, depending on which area of Portland you are driving to. Beaverton is less than 9 miles away, and Tigard is less than 7 miles.

For air transportation in the area, Portland International Airport is 26 miles from Sherwood, and is served by many major airlines. There are dozens of shuttles, car services, and transportation options for you to chose from to get you to the airport. McMinnville Municipal Airport is a smaller airport offering service, about 24 miles from Sherwood. The McNary Field located in Salem is a third alternative, about 34 miles away.

HISTORY/POPULATION

The original inhabitants of Sherwood were the Tualatin Indians. The year 1843 brought settlers in wagon trains to the area. James C. Smock founded the settlement, and Sherwood was originally named Smockville in his honor. However, in 1892, when the town was incorporated, a local businessman suggested "Sherwood", which sounds more aesthetically pleasing and, fittingly, evokes the image of a beautiful forest such as Sherwood Forest in England. Residents were quick to agree, and Smockville became Sherwood.

In 1911, Sherwood had a population of only 350 and was one square mile in area. Today, the town has grown to encompass around 5 square miles and is home to almost 17,000 people. The economy has diversified as well, growing from a brick manufacturing center to a thriving small town with many shops and cottage industries.

ABOUT EDUCATION

There are 4 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and a high school in the Sherwood school district. close to 5,000 students attend these schools, and grades are above the state average in math, reading, and writing.

For higher education, Sherwood residents turn to Linfield College. Linfield is a four-year private college offering coed undergraduate study, and specializing in liberal arts, science, international programs, and business. It is located in nearby McMinnville, accessible by Highway 99. George Fox University is another popular alternative that has been named a "Best Value" by U.S. News and World Report. This non-profit Christian college offers 4-year courses.

Also, Portland abounds with highly noted educational establishments as well. Located about 20 miles from Sherwood, these include Portland Community College and Portland State University, and of course there is Oregon State University in Corvallis and University of Oregon in Eugene.

The new Sherwood Public Library offers students and others interested in self-education access over 40,000 books, audio & video materials, and Magazine subscriptions.

SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS

For outdoor adventures, Magness Memorial Tree Farm offers 80 acres of hiking, views, and picnic areas. It also has a 60-foot lookout tower from which you can survey this beautiful area. Oliphant Orchards is another popular destination with 26 acres of fruits and nuts, as well as cider and pumpkins on a seasonal basis. Spirit Mountain Casino is also nearby. Real Estate Tips
First Time Buyers >Finding A Real Estate Agent

Finding an experienced, reliable real estate agent whom you like and trust is the first step in locating your new home. Here is an approach to finding the right agent.

Call or stop by a real estate office and ask to speak with the manager. Describe the type of home you are looking for. The manager can refer you to an agent who knows that market very well. You might also use weekend "open houses" as opportunities to look for a real estate agent, as well as a new home. It is really a matter of chemistry! If you meet someone who is knowledgeable and with whom you feel comfortable, call that person!

Once you establish a strong working relationship with a real estate agent, your agent can show you a number of homes for sale, even if they are listed with other companies. Often the agent can show you a property as soon as it is placed on the market. Many of the best homes never even make it to the weekend classified section of the newspaper!
