The original inhabitants of Sherwood were the Tualatin Indians. The year 1843 brought settlers in wagon trains to the area. James C. Smock founded the settlement, and Sherwood was originally named Smockville in his honor. However, in 1892, when the town was incorporated, a local businessman suggested "Sherwood", which sounds more aesthetically pleasing and, fittingly, evokes the image of a beautiful forest such as Sherwood Forest in England. Residents were quick to agree, and Smockville became Sherwood. In 1911, Sherwood had a population of only 350 and was one square mile in area. Today, the town has grown to encompass around 5 square miles and is home to almost 17,000 people. The economy has diversified as well, growing from a brick manufacturing center to a thriving small town with many shops and cottage industries.
